Korea: Swine Flu? You're Fired!!!

Shortly following a vacation in Thailand, an unnamed ESL teacher arrived back to a well known Korean cram school to complete his contract (3 months to go).  Little did the teacher realize that he had contracted H1N1 either during his summer vacation or shortly after.  A week went by with no problems; however, on Wednesday the teacher was stricken ill with flu symptoms, concerned the teacher called in sick.  Distressed, the teacher thought the most responsible thing to do would be to go to the government health office to be tested.

After 48 hours the test results came back positive for H1N1; shortly after, the school was contacted, closed temporarily and teachers were asked to be tested (though no one else tested positive).  The unnamed EFL teacher was quarantined for a week in his apartment and asked by the school to remain away for an additional week.

Students began dropping out of the Korean hakwan, especially after parents realized that the ‘contaminated’ teacher would be returning.  Under best interest for the school, the teacher was asked to not return to work.

After contacting the labor board, the previously ‘infected’ teacher was told there was little to do receive his losses (loss salary, severance, airfare…).  However, because the institution broke the contract without 30 days notice, the cram school is obligated to give one month salary.  This process can take months and the unnamed teacher from Canada is about ready to ‘count his losses and go home...’ with no intention to return.

First of all, the grammatical error in the title is disheartening for a site dedicated to news from the ESL world.

For the story itself, it's not surprising. Koreans are so unfaltering in their trust in junk media and pseudoscience that even a clean bill of health from a doctor does little to clear their blind fears.
