New Zealand: Korean Student Stabs Teacher

A South Korean international student attending a New Zealand college stabbed his teacher in front of 20 classmates.  Full details have not been released, and it is unclear what motivated the student to attack his teacher in the back. The 17 year old assailant had only been attending 'Avondale College' for a few weeks when he stabbed the teacher in the back.  Apparently the teacher had his back turned to the class while writing on the white board.

The teacher sustained serious injuries, however he is expected to fully recover; the student was arrested shortly after as he attempted to escape on a motorcycle:
The student had been followed to a Blockhouse Bay address by police patrol cars and the police helicopter.

He was caught as he tried to flee on a motor scooter.

He was wrestled to the ground and handcuffed before being led away. - New Zealand Herald
It is very unusual to see a Korean student involved in a violent attack.  However the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre was also preformed by a South Korean student.  The student had fiercely killed 30 students and injured 30 others by gunfire (Full story: Chronicle).  The difference however, the Virginia Tech massacre assailant had been living in the US for his entire life, while the New Zealand stabbing the student had only been in the country for a short time.

This is the second stabbing reported this week.  We reported an early stabbing of a US international school teacher being stabbed in Egypt. (Egypt: US Foreign Teacher Stabbed)

Koreans started to require teachers to have criminal record checks and health checks (because one teacher and his photos). Perhaps it is time for Koreans entering foreign countries to have sanity checks.

lol That's funny.  Perhaps in the future there will be some sort of student screening that involves a psych test.  However, I think it would involve all students not just the international ones.  Most Western countries have equality issues that have to be dealt with.

For what it is worth, Avondale College is a high school, not university.

Perhaps the word 'college' should have been used rather than university.  Sorry about that
