A former English teacher allegedly shook his 12 day old newborn son to death in Japan. Anthony Buckley, a 20 year old British man, had met his wife on the internet and had been living in his Ome district of Tokyo since July, 2007. Anthony’s career as an English teacher is currently unclear, however he was unemployed at the time of the incident. According to the Guardian:
Police suspect that Buckley, who speaks little Japanese and claimed he had been "stressed out" at the time of the incident, shook the baby and slammed his head against the kitchen table after failing to stop him crying. -
GuardianMr. Buckley’s 19 year old wife had returned home from her job and realized her child was drastically ill and immediately brought the child in for medical assistance. The child died the day after from subdural hemorrhaging.
Police originally treated the death as an accident after Buckley told them the child had slipped though his hands while he was bathing him. -
GuardianThe initial death occurred in mid June, however with news of the actual beating, Anthony was arrested on August 22nd, 2008. Currently little details have been released, however, the British expatriate’s embassy has been notified and been offered consular services.
Sad news indeed when situations like this happen. It is bad enough that it happens in society in general, but when it hits a teacher community, it stains all our names. But it is good to know, that the 20 year old was not a 'real' teacher in the country. He obviously was not qualified seeing that he was so young and he was not employed at the time to the death.
I just can not help but put my thoughts on the mother. Met foreign husband on the net... married... had child... husband can't work... she must work (remember this was 12 DAYS after birth!!!)... come home and dad killed son...
This brings a whole new meaning of dead beat dad.
