Korea Jeju Island to Launch English Education Complex
South Korea, Thursday July 24, the Korean government announced its plans to ‘establish an English education complex’ on the island of Jeju. At an estimated cost of 1.4 trillion Won or $1.4 billion US dollars, the plan is to build four elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools by 2015, which can host 9000 students. The entire curriculum will be in English. By 2011 two schools will be set up as the first steps to fulfill the program. The proposed complex is more of an English city which can accommodate 24000 people and the official language being English. Unlike international schools in Korea (international schools in South are only allowed to accept a small percentage of Korean nationals), the new English facilities found on the island are permitted to accept Korean students from around the county. The JDC is in talks with U.S. and British educational institutions including Phillips Academy Andover, Phillips Exeter Academy, Milton Academy and Britain's Sevenoaks to open two private primary and middle schools and a public high school by March 2011 as the first step of the project, it said.
For the long-term plan, the JDC will seek to attract students from China, Japan and Southeast Asian countries who want to learn English overseas, it added… - Yonhap

If the plan to create this complex is fulfilled, huge opportunities for foreign language instructors are predicted to open. The Southern island of Juju, Korea's ‘international city,’ English is proclaimed to be the second language, however, the people are far away from English Fluency. Getting around in Korea with just English is very difficult when communicating. Jeju Island can be even more of a struggle, being that the island has its own dialect far different from mainland. Many Koreans who travel to the island find that the Juju dialect is like another language in itself.
